Our Story
I have been in sales for over a decade and have always enjoyed the challenge. I was able to consistently bring in new business, yet I was always looking for that extra edge to push me over the top to become a truly great salesperson.
I READ THE BOOKS!
Like a lot of sales people I read a ton of books about sales strategies and techniques, looking for that magic formula that would instantly increase my sales. Although I was able to gain some helpful pointers that certainly improved my skills, it was mostly a lot of theory and impractical advice that I found difficult to implement when actually in front of customers.
I ATTENDED THE SEMINARS!
Seminars are great at getting ones motivation up to get out and sell, but for me that increased motivation only seemed to last a few days. Sure there were some interesting sales systems presented on how to increase sales results--and they made it sound so easy; however, these methods proved difficult to learn and time consuming to apply.
I was searching for something that would have a major and immediate impact on my sales results, yet not require a huge investment of my time and effort. I was tired of spinning my wheels cold calling and pursuing customers non-stop. I was certain there was a way to have customers lined up to give me their business.
AHA!
One morning I was listening to a sales training tape on the way to an appointment. I had listened to this tape many times, but one statistic struck me in a big way that day:
80% of sales are made after the 5th contact with a prospect, yet only 10% of sales people ever follow-up more than 5 times.
I was definitely guilty of falling into the 90% of sales people who did not follow-up enough. Often if I called on a company and they showed no interest, I would simply delete them from my prospect list. What a mistake!!
When I got home that day I did some additional research and discovered that 68% of companies surveyed said the reason they left a particular vendor was because they felt ignored by their salesperson.
It was obvious that by simply increasing the frequency of contact with all of my customers and prospects, I would automatically increase my sales and customer retention. The problem was that my total number of customers and prospects was around 250. It would be impossible to call and visit every one of them on a regular basis to get past that 5th contact.
That’s when I developed a postcard campaign, sending out a new design every single month. These were not off the shelf, impersonal postcards, but specifically tailored to focus on my target market. My customers and prospects soon looked forward to receiving these cards every month—many saved them because they were unique and even put up the postcard in their cubicles or by their desk. There was MY name right in front of them every day.
Soon I began to hear from prospects I had not contacted in months—they were calling ME! By the end of 6 months my sales had increased 50%!!
